World AIDs Day

Today is World AIDs Day. In honour of this, our MCC partner, POMC Generations held some festivities. Conveniently, it was the market day of the week in the town of  Ewuaso.

After Shaai with my friend/neighbor Lois and Generations board member Maria...

...there was some effort to get the little generator going for the sound system to be run in the procession through town.

Then there was the procession with all board members, adult educators and staff wearing our barney purples and white caps.

Walking through town even on a normal day always requires greeting those you know and even some you don't along the way... Board members and local pastors walk for awareness of HIV/AIDs toward the market center.

HIV/AIDs still has quite a stigma in this very rural, very traditional Maasai town. These are a group of brave and big hearted people working to change that situation. Everyone had to give at least a small speech, including Doug and I.

A row of girls who were "rescued" from the local tradition of female circumcision and early marriage by a local Catholic program, joined in solidarity with our HIV/AIDs awareness event.

The market was busy...

women sell beads for Maasai masaa (jewelry) under a makeshift shade.

Clothes, beans and sukuma. The woman under the red bandana is cutting a roll of kale into fine shreds to be sold by the bag.

After a long day in the hot sun, a purple selfie.
