Our First Week

During our first week here in Nairobi, we celebrated our 2nd anniversary and marked it by sharing a burrito at a nearby restaurant. We reminisced about that weekend 2 years ago when we had an  intimate  family reunion style wedding in the middle of 30 inches of snow at my parent's home in Pennsylvania. It was beautiful. Such special memories. 

This flower reminds me of a peace lilly, but it is the biggest and thickest  flower I've ever seen. There are so many gorgeous flowers and gardens here at the guest house.  We are enjoying absolutely amazing temps, friends. Cool enough for bed coverings at night and sometimes jeans and a sweater in the evening, but warm enough for short sleeves for the warm sun in the day. Not to rub it in, but this is about as good as it gets for climate!

We attend Maa class at the Anglican Church of Kenya and this is our teacher. He is a 22 year old native speaker trying to make his way in "town" (Nairobi) away from his family and his village and studying at the university. He believes so strongly in education. He is the second born of his mother's 8 children in a family with many wives and over 50 children of his father.  Being the eldest son, he is in charge of his younger siblings and he says he will not allow his younger sisters to be married early.  We enjoy tea (shaai in Maa, derived from chai, Swahili) at 10:30 every morning.

We take our lesson in this "hut".  We found a route for walking to and from school. We walk 2.5 hours each day total (1.25 each way). It is equal or faster than taking the bus in Nairobi's crazy traffic and we get our exercise! Yes! thank you.
