A good while back now, I had the revelation that surviving in this community is like being in a river...
Walk to the top of the rise and see below you the river. It is full. Rain has made it swollen and it flows smoothly and steadily, green like a marble. You drop down toward the bank. There are no rapids because all the rocks are covered. There are not trees to trap you, the banks are clear.
You step into the edge and sit down, lifting your feet. You start to move. You turn for a moment, fighting the current, but then you relax and submit to the flow. After a while, you realize that a kick of your legs adjusts your position a little, but fighting the will of the current is pointless.
As you move along, you see something coming. You reach for it, but at the last minute it bobs and is gone. No going back. On you go. There's no seeing around the bend, there's no turning back. There's no resisting. There's only submission.

Great analogy - especially the bits about letting go of something desired but unattained, and not being able to see around the bend. I'm wondering if it might just possibly apply outside of Kenya ....
