Indian Ocean Annual Leave

We spent a week of annual leave in the apartment on the end with veranda on both sides. We shared the rent with our friends from Nairobi and their parents who were on leave from Sudan. It was a houseful, but we found our spaces and there were long stretches of beach for walks and runs- which we took advantage of since we can't really run where we live in Maasai land.  The beach in front is the fine white sand along the Indian Ocean in a town south of Mombasa.

The moon was full so the tides were very high and very low. Since we were staying right on the ocean, we watched every tide's rise and fall. Our daily schedules fell into step with it.

My friend Nani and I watched the camels get a bath. There were plenty of beach people trying to coax us to take a ride on their boat or their camel, to watch their dance, to buy this or that or to give them something. But, after they finally believed that we just wanted to enjoy the beach, it was very quiet for the most part.

There was some lovely snorkeling we did right off the beach and since the tide was low, we swam all the way out to the reef.

At the reef, there were a couple little coves of shallow white beach warm as a bathtub.

On the reef.

The trip required a long day of driving each way with all of us crammed in a land rover.- four adults, a 4 yr old and a 3 month old. We all agreed that we'd check into the cost of flying if there's a next time.
